What is a doula? Jacksonville and St. Augustine Doula group
“My doula was about as essential as my midwife because she was the guardian of my birth experience...”
What is a doula? | Benefits of Doula Support
A doula is a woman who provides physical and emotional support to a
woman before, during and after childbirth. The Greek word doula means "servant-woman" and is often referred to as the most important female servant in ancient Greece, who likely assisted the lady of the house in labor. Please see "Expecting parents: What is a doula?" article and see video from the Today Show. To make sure you are choosing the best doula for your families needs, see our Interviewing Doulas page for potential interview questions and join us for our Meet the Doulas Events held in Jacksonville and St. Augustine. A doula is not meant to replace a husband or partner, but to enhance that relationship and provide the birthing mother with an additional source of physical, emotional and educational support. Birth doulas pay close attention to the family's needs, advocate for her and use techniques to help alleviate the emotional and physical stress of labor. If you are hoping for natural childbirth in a hospital, a birth center or home birth, a birth doula can be a great asset to the outcome you are hoping for! We offer doula services for miscarriages, home birth, hospital births, medicalized births and even support for c-section (planned or unplanned) moms!
